No Footing Wins Best Film!

On Friday Oct. 1, the film No Footing was shown at the Project Twenty1 Film and Animation Festival. The screening was well attended and much enjoyed. The festival concluded on Sunday Oct. 3 with an awards ceremony, where No Footing took home the prize for Best Feature! Congratulations to everyone who worked on the film. Hopefully this is just the beginning...

Who wants to go to the movies?! In October you will have 3 chances to see the film No Footing (inspired by my song No Footing) at 3 different film festivals. The first is this Friday in Philadelphia and concludes with a Q&A with cast and crew. Here are the details:

Had a great time in Hartford last night! Many thanks to all the old friends who came out to support my first performance in Hartford with my trio. I hope to be back in CT and the rest of the New England for more shows this summer. And if you're ever passing through Hartford, definitely check out Black Eyed Sally's for some good music and great food.

New Gear in the Family

2010 started out cold, gray, and quiet for me. But I was woken up in mid-March when my car was totaled in a parking lot accident. Unfortunately, my trusty Roland keyboard that you see in all my videos and heard at all my shows was is in the back, and was also destroyed. For the complete story, see my BLOG.

But, several weeks later I'm happy to say that I've rebuilt and I'm back in action! Two weeks ago I replaced my blue 1998 subaru wagon with a green 2002 subaru wagon. And my trusty Roland Hp101 piano has been replaced with a great deal I found on a Roland FP7. What can I say, it's not much of a change, but when something you like is taken away from you, it's best to just replace it with a newer version of what you liked.

Tonight will be my first performance on the new keyboard. I will be performing with friends Dan and Lauren Smith at Messiah College. I'm looking forward to breaking in the new rig, and if you're in the area you should come check it out!

No Footing Film Premiere

This past Thursday was the premiere of the film No Footing in Pitman, NJ. The film, written by Mike Licisyn and inspired by my song of the same name, was a huge success! Over 350 people paid to see Licisyn's first feature length film. The audience was active, reacting throughout the film and staying through the credits to meet the cast. On a personal note, having only seen clips of the film until Thursday, it was a great pleasure to see the completed project and to hear five of my songs shape the emotional content of the story.

But don't take my word for it. Read what critic Lavinia DeCastro of the South Jersey Courier Post had to say about No Footing in her online article from Dec. 18. I even got a blurb!

"Brooklyn-based singer songwriter Nate Graham’s music was almost a character in the film, sometimes serving as a narrator of sorts and providing a window into the main character’s thoughts."

Thanks to everyone who made the film and the opening night a success! Stay tuned for news on future showings elsewhere in the Philadelphia area.

"No Footing" - The Movie Video Blog

Writer/Director Mike Licisyn has become a close friend over the past 3 years. We met when a mutual friend introduced us at a show of mine. He heard my song "No Footing", and became inspired to write a movie about the sentiments from the song. Now, fast forward 3 years, the movie "No Footing" has been written, cast, filmed, edited, and scored. The film is currently in the final stages of post-production, and will hopefully be released this fall/winter.

It's been a long week playing, driving, and sleeping on inflatable mattresses the past week. These are some reflections:

- The venue "Spike Hill" in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is great. Nice stage, plenty of room for listeners, and a well placed bar in the same room where people can talk without distracting the show. The whole thing opens up right onto the street so that passers-by can hear what's going on.

- Boston is a fun city, though I imagine it gets really cold in the winter. (however, when I said that to a Bostonian, he responded, "well I guess it gets cold, but you just put a coat on"... touche). Can't wait to get back there.

- Don't bring a car into Boston when it snows

- Fergie's Pub in Philly is a fun venue. Not a real listening crowd and not a great sound system, but a great vibe and a packed house. And amazing nachos. Truly amazing.

- Don't drive through Queens at 4pm on a weekday.

- Taller air mattresses are far more comfortable than less tall air mattresses, but also far more dangerous to roll off of while sleeping.

- Drivers need to stop slowing down to look at the accident that happened in the opposite lane of traffic. It just slows everyone down!!

Today I'm taking a breather before continuing on to Lancaster, PA for my show on Monday. Tell your friends! (I will be dressed in full Amish garb)

Thanks to all who voted for me in Austin City Limits competition. You all managed to accumulate 240 votes and a #60 ranking in just 1 week. I love the support!

Unfortunately, after I got in the top 100, it was up to the competition judges to place me in the top 20, and I did not make the cut for the next round of voting. Given your strong showing in round 1, I'm sure you could have voted me into the top 5 in round 3. But no matter.

Now we look forward to the fall, and lots more music. Thanks again for all your support!

Fun Show in Philly

It was a fun show in Philadelphia last night. The crowd looked great from on stage, and they were extremely responsive! The Bill O'Meara Band played a great set with some new tunes. Can't wait to get back to The Tin Angel again soon.

But perhaps that best moment of the night was at 1:30 in the morning when we were all packed up, standing in the back ally of The Tin Angel, shooting the shit for a few minutes before we took off. Schmitty (Bill's drummer) was telling me another of his crazy stories when a man walked by, looked up at us, and said, "Have a good night." I looked over at Bill and said, "Is that Danny Bonaduce?" And with that, Bill yelled, "Hey! That's Danny Bonaduce!" The guy turned, grinned, and kept on walking down the ally. It was definitely Danny Bonaduce. And he was definitely messed up.

Always a good night when you spot a Partridge Family cast member.

I performed live on Radio 104.5 in Philadelphia last Friday. I was officially backing up my friend Bill O'Meara for the gig, but you will notice that the radio host specifically mentions liking only one instrument: the piano. "Those keys are spicy". Don't believe me? Watch the video of the performance that was broadcast live at 5pm, Friday July 24. First song is Bill O'Meara's "Passing Time". Second song is The Killers' "All These Things I Have Done". (We had to do 1 original and and 1 cover.)
